Sunia Luther who after doing decades of resilience research, which has shown that the single most

important thing that helps children do well in spite of high pressure and stress and adversity

is having strong supportive relationships with those who take care of them. And because of that,

Dr. Luther has brought the same approach in working with moms who are facing different types

of daily stress, work in demanding settings, or their whole job is working in the demanding

setting of the households. For all of those moms, she's taken the research and put it into

practice by creating nonprofit groups where moms can have and find authentic connections. Dr.

Luther's research is so pioneering in the fields of resilience and vulnerability in various

populations, including youth and poverty, children and families affected by mental illness,

teens and upper middle-class families. Her research has been focused on motherhood as of late,

very specifically. So we are talking about in this episode motherhood as a proxy for whoever the

primary caregiver is. But in many ways, there's just a very specific thing about motherhood,

and that's what she's exploring, and exploring factors that best help mothers negotiate the

challenges of motherhood, and be able to best support their children. Sunia was also my first
