Summary

Michael Schumacher's F1 debut lasted only a few seconds, yet he made a huge impression and by the time of his second appearance he'd already switched teams. In this episode Glenn Freeman is joined by Jordan designer Gary Anderson and Edd Straw to revisit what happened in 1991 around Schumacher's famous debut, from how he got the Jordan drive for Spa, to why the team didn't have him under a secure enough contract to stop Benetton snapping him up for the next race at Monza. We also look at how Jordan's other car could have won the Belgian GP that year, how Roberto Moreno almost stopped the Benetton switch happening, why Flavio Briatore ordered Alex Zanardi to walk around the Monza paddock in Benetton overalls, and what led Ayrton Senna to weigh in on the saga in public. There's also the second contract controversy of Schumacher's career that happened just a few months later when he was preparing for his first full season in F1.

It's not easy to make a huge impression on Formula One when your debut lasts only a couple of corners,

0:11.0

but Michael Schumacher managed just that in 1991 when he turned up at the Belgian Grand Prix to drive for Jordan.

0:17.0

Two weeks later, he'd switched green overalls for yellow, having been poached by

0:21.2

Benetton, who we would go on to win two world championships with. Today on Bring Back V10s,

0:26.5

we'll explain exactly how Schumacher slipped through Jordan's fingers over the course of less

0:31.4

than a fortnight. Before we get into that detail, remember to get your questions in to ask

us anything about F1 from 1989 to 2005

for our series finale using the hashtag Bring Back V10s on Twitter. And if you'd like to show

your support for the show, why not join the likes of Ronster 84 and Stuart of the Jets in leaving

us a five-star review and submitting a question there too.

But let's crack on with Michael Schumacher's arrival in F-1 for now.

0:58.5

And joining me for this one are Ed Straw and the man who designed Schumacher's first

1:02.8

F-1 car, Gary Anderson.

1:05.0

So Gary, your status as the designer of the Jordan-191 certainly trumps anything Ed can bring to the table here.

1:13.5

So you can have the first swing at our opening question, which quite simply is when you think

1:17.7

of Michael Schumack as a rival in Formula One, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

1:22.8

Well, really, he was very competent. We did a few laps of Silverstone South circuit before we went to

1:28.2

spa in the car and you know he got in the car it was it was where he should have been he as i say

1:34.6

he was very competent um we actually brought him in after about three lapses and we tell him to take it a

1:40.0

little bit easier um and he sort of said well i am but am. But, you know, into the chicane at the pits

1:45.8

at Silverstone South, where you know, you can park the truck and stuff. He was, he was definitely

1:51.4

in control of the car. And the car was well and truly out of shape on every occasion. So he was,
