Summary

The 1993 Portuguese Grand Prix fell in the middle of two of the busiest weeks for off-track stories in Formula 1 history. Ex-F1 driver and Sky Sports expert Karun Chandhok joins Glenn Freeman and Edd Straw to look back at all the big talking points from late-1993, from Nigel Mansell's sensational rookie Indycar success (and Bernie Ecclestone's failed attempt to get him back to F1 for 1994), Ayrton Senna effectively forcing Alain Prost out of Williams, plus McLaren dropping Michael Andretti, promoting Mika Hakkinen, and trying to sign Michael Schumacher! We also look at how Hakkinen upstaged Senna in qualifying for his McLaren debut, and the effect that might have had on Senna's remaining races with the team, how Schumacher salvaged a difficult weekend to catch everyone out to win the race, the first signs of a Ferrari revival under Jean Todt, a scary crash for Gerhard Berger, and why McLaren decided against Lamborghini engines to team up with Peugeot.

Welcome to the latest episode of Bring Back V10s.

Now normally this is the part of the show where I come up with something snappy to say about the episode we're going to talk about,

0:15.0

and the music fades out into the background.

0:17.0

But our episode today is going to take us all over the place to talk about

0:20.9

some great subjects and major storylines that were going on in F1 around the time of the 1993

0:26.7

Portuguese Grand Prix. So you can't really wrap it all up in one hit. All I can tell you is get

0:32.1

ready for talk about Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Alan Prost, Mika Hakenon, Michael Andretti, Michael Schumacher, Yoss Verstappen, Peugeot, Lamborghini and much, much more. Before we get going, remember to get your questions in for our series finale using the hashtag Bring Back V10s on Twitter, or leave us a five-star review and submit a question there too. We've had another load of reviews in, so I'll

0:54.3

give a quick thank you to Alex G, D.C. Roberts, Wright-Palava, and many more for the recent

0:59.5

reviews we've had. The questions are mounting up, so we might have to go back on our vow not to

1:04.2

break the series finale into two episodes again like we did last time. Anyway, back to today on Portugal 93,

1:12.5

because we've got a lot to get through.

1:16.2

Joining me, Glenn Freeman, for what's going to be an epic episode,

1:24.2

our Edge Draw and Bring Back V10's returnee, XF1 driver and Sky Sports F1 pundit and expert, Karun Chanduk.

1:25.8

Karun, welcome back.

You appeared on the first two episodes ever of Bring Back V10Tens when we talked about Alan Prost getting fired by Ferrari. So you know the drill by now. The opening question is what's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of our subject for the day? But you've seen this script and you know how all over the place we're going. So which storyline are you going to pick?

1:49.8

Well, I think there's, as you said, there's so many things going on. I think the Hacken debut and the Merig around of the seats around Prost, Sena and Williams, you know, that's got

1:58.5

to be the two big takeaways. You know, let alone the fact of Michael Schumacher won his second ever Grand Prix that we can. That's almost a byline in everything that happened around that race, isn't it? Yeah, that's the thing. It can get overlooked. But someone who I don't think is going to overlook it is Ed, because Ed, I know this is one of your favorite races of all time. So when you look back at what

2:19.0

you want to pick out, are you thinking more of the track action than the news pages of the magazines

2:23.8

at the time? Yeah, I am because it's a forgotten classic as well as being that important win for

2:28.8

Schumacher. But sometimes there are moments in races that stay with you for some reason and just get imprinted

2:35.0

on your memory. And I can remember watching the race live and having already been, you know,

2:39.1

really excited by Mika Hakenen's qualifying performance, I thought he had the lead into turn one.
