Summary

The 1990 French Grand Prix was the setting for one of the most remarkable turnarounds in F1 history. The plucky Leyton House team went from failing to qualify for the previous race in Mexico to coming within a couple of laps of winning at Paul Ricard with Ivan Capelli. In this episode we look at how that transformation happened - thanks to some fine work by a young designer named Adrian Newey... just before he was let go by the team! As well as tracking Newey's falling out with Leyton House and his year-long bid to work out what was going wrong with his designs, the other stories we look into include politics and fallings out at Ferrari, Arrows trying to make big moves on the recruitment front, Jordan's engine deal that nearly upset Benetton, contract dramas for Jean Alesi - including why his 1991 Williams deal fell over because of Ayrton Senna, how Leyton House came up with an almost-winning strategy to defeat Alain Prost's Ferrari, and why this heartbreaking near-miss was still a cause for celebration at the team.

We've had a bunch of reviews since series two started, actually, so I'll give a quick thank you to Kieran, Nico, Chris and Cisco, who are some of the most recent listeners to leave us a review. They are much appreciated, and like I say, I do make sure that we read them all. I'm Glenn Freeman and joining me to

race, Sam Smith and Ed Straw. Sam will let you go first with the opening question because when

1:06.1

we discussed you being on this episode ahead of time, you declared your levels of adoration for this race to be not far behind Eds.

1:14.3

So you can take the opening question, which is, of course, when you think of this race, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

1:20.6

Well, that's a big billing, Glenn. Thanks.

1:22.3

But I think it was just the sheer excitement of seeing Ivan Capelli about to win his first Grand Prix after failing

to qualify a fortnight before in Mexico. I was just so sure that he was going to do it. Pross

had been looking for several laps and just didn't seem to have an answer to that Miami Blue

late in the house. I was just stunned into immobility, really,

at the prospects of Capelli winning his first Grand Prix

in such an unlikely manner.

And then that sense of crushing despair, I think,

as he just faltered with an issue in the last few laps
