Our forefathers never trusted society at large,

and this road was one of their very few concessions

to the government of the colony,

and later the state.

It was a grudging concession as well.

We have never really trusted our neighbors.

And the building of the original road was grueling,

clearing these dense forests was dangerous. The marshy ground frequently swallowed up the supply carts and occasionally

one of the workers with it. Progress comes with sacrifice.

Usually that sacrifice is laid on the weakest of us.
