Thanks for joining. Today, we're reading Joshua chapter's 11 through 12. But chapter 11, as you may have noticed in your journal, raises a question regarding the hardening of hearts,

0:21.7

how are we to understand Joshua 11, verse 20, which reads,

0:26.5

For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel so that he might

0:31.8

destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy as the Lord had commanded Moses.

0:39.3

Well, let's backtrack a little and remember how we got here. In Chapter 9, the Israelites made a treaty with the Givianites,

0:44.8

having failed to seek direction from the Lord, they blindly yoked themselves to the Gibyanites.

0:50.0

In Chapter 10, the five Amorite kings all teamed up against Israel because Israel's partnership

1:08.1

the Israelites killed the five kings and take control of the whole region.

1:11.6

Chapter 11, another king hears of Israel's victorious battles, so he gathers some neighboring kings

1:17.1

and they all go up against Israel together. But this time, with a huge army and mighty chariots.

1:22.5

And again, the same thing happens. Israel, under Joshua's leadership, goes to war God's way and they win.

1:29.0

They win and they win and they win. Then we get to verses 16 through 20, where Joshua takes the

1:35.4

entire land and the why behind his success is sort of summed up. Joshua 11 versus 16 through 20

1:41.9

in the NLT read. So Joshua conquered the entire region, the hill country, the entire

1:48.4

Negev, the whole area around the town of Goshen, the western foothills, the Jordan Valley,

1:53.7

the mountains of Israel and the Galilean foothills. The Israelite territory now extended all the way

1:59.7

from Mount Halak, which leads up to Sierra in the north.

2:03.4

As far north as Bal Gad at the foot of Mount Hermon in the valley of Lebanon.

2:08.9

Lots of hard names in there.
