You know that a lot of people vanish in this region, right?

That's what my friend Sarah Wilcox tells me as we hike along a trail.

My family's camping in the area and we decided to go on a day hike.

It was pretty boring back at camp.

You can only snack and sit around so long.

We felt like moving our legs.

Besides, we had terrible phone reception

in the area, and we heard a rumor that the closer you got up this nearby hill, the more

bars you'd find on your phone. So I pulled my phone out. It had been at one bar for a long time.

Then another bar showed up. Sarah, we're on the right path. I just got another bar.

Good.

I probably have a zillion text messages from back home.

Even though I told them that reception out here in the middle of the boondocks was spotty at best.

What did people do 40 years ago without their phones?
