Summary

WELCOME BACK, REFINERS! TIME FOR MORE "ORIGINS"...
It's been a long, hot summer on the picket line for both WGA and SAG-AFTRA members. Nothing is moving so far in the way of negotiations or agreements. Instead of sitting around bored down here on the Severed Floor, I've started to take a look at those things that influenced Dan Erickson as he was creating "Severance." I'm calling it the "Severed: Origins" Series. Hey, it may not be Season Two, but it's better than listening to Dylan tell us about his caricatures again.

This time out on "Origins", we begin our epic breakdown of the 1999 sci-fi masterpiece "The Matrix". We will be ripping this baby apart in intimate detail. We came really close to breaking down "Dark City'...but then I watched "Dark City." Details in the podcast.

"The Matrix" was a philosophical and cultural phenomenon...or maybe it was nothing more than a high-minded shoot-em-up (according to Roger Ebert). Wherever you fall on the "Matrix" importance continuum, we can all agree Keanu was cool and the effects were AWESOME! Here...have a Blue Pill 'n Chill. It's time to go find that spoon.

This is Part One of "The Matrix" Origins Breakdown. Be watching for additional installments of "The Matrix" Origins in coming weeks. Want to watch "The Matrix" for yourself? It is available for immediate streaming to Max subscribers. You can rent it from all of the usual rental places for anywhere from $1.99 to $3.99.

A big 'thank you' to Kier Eagan, er I mean Marc Geller! Marc both sat for an interview (make sure to check it out) AND recorded some great bumpers as Kier himself.

By the way, this is Severed, the Ultimate Severance podcast.

I'm your host, Alan S. The writer and actor strikes continue, so we're still hanging out here

on the Severed Floor, checking into Origins. Those things Dan Erickson has mentioned that

0:33.6

influenced him during the creation of Severance. When it comes to influential movies, Dan regularly lists titles like Brazil and The Matrix.

0:43.1

Usually at the end of these lists, he will pause, then say something like,

0:47.1

oh, and there's Dark City. I really liked that film.

0:50.6

Dark City seems to get reverential treatment, and it's not just from Dan. Others also sing the

0:56.4

praises of Dark City. It is hailed as this very groundbreaking sci-fi movie. Roger Ebert loved it.

1:03.3

He even did special commentary on the Dark City DVD. As I kept running across these references,

1:09.7

I was starting to feel a little embarrassed.

1:11.6

I'd never heard of Dark City. It came out in 1998 and was directed by Alex Proyas. He's the same

1:17.4

guy who directed The Crow. My original plan for this round of Origins episodes was to do a deep

1:23.8

dive into The Matrix. It's one of my favorite movies of all time,

1:27.7

and it was mentioned multiple times by Dan Erickson as an influence.

1:32.2

I started reading background and reviews about The Matrix to prepare.

1:37.3

In many Matrix reviews, I also found references to Dark City.

Some reviewers even implied Dark City did it first and did it

better. In the Wikipedia article about The Matrix, there's a mention of Dark City as being an

influence on the Wakowskies. Okay, Universe, I got the hint. I decided I'd better check out

Dark City. I was even thinking maybe I should be doing these next Origins episodes about
