Summary

HEY THERE, REFINER!!
Glad to see you've come back for more Severed: “Origins”! Since the WGA continues to strike for the rights of our beleaguered writers, I decided we needed something to keep us busy between now and S2. Enter the "Origins" series from "Severed"!! It's a deep-dive look at those things that INSPIRED the creation of "Severance"! The logic goes like this: if you like the end result, you'll probably like what went into it, right??

This time out, we're going DEEP into the 1985 Terry Gilliam movie, "Brazil." It's a personal fave of mine, and one of the influences cited by Dan Erickson regarding the creation of "Severance." Strap in, Refiners!! This is a MAJOR file! We're covering some bio info on Director Terry Gilliam and we're going to get about half an hour into the movie this time around. Be ready for more parts in this series!!

For now...it's time to get on the elevator. We've got a file to work on!!

Huge thanks to Adam Scott, star of 'Severance' and host of the Severance Podcast for recording a custom intro for "Severed." Make sure to check out 'The Severance Podcast w/Ben Stiller & Adam Scott" wherever you found this one!

Hey there, Macro Data Refiners, so glad to see you've decided to join me for this special edition of Severed, the Ultimate Severance podcast.

Since the WGA strike continues and now the SAG AFRA strike is looming, it's easy to go a little stir

crazy. Your Audi? Well, it could be driving or skiing, whatever we do up there. So they're fine.

0:37.1

They're probably jet skiing or

snowboarding, but down here on the severed floor, the weight can be quite tedious. I've been looking

0:44.0

for things to keep us all busy. There are only so many mental health walks Cobell is going to allow.

I thought Helene needed a walk. I mean, I'm allowed to do that. This is another

0:54.7

installment of Severed Origins, taking a deep dive look at those things cited as influences in the

1:02.1

creation of severance. From the moment we first walked down a maze of hallways to sit behind ancient

1:08.0

computers, I saw the very recognizable fingerprints of Terry Gilliam's

1:12.8

1985 dystopian masterpiece, Brazil, all over Severance. Dan Erickson has mentioned the

1:19.7

influence of Brazil on his vision, but he really didn't have to. There's an indelible weirdness

1:25.6

to Brazil. It is a singular vision and a singular movie experience.

1:31.9

As usual, huge spoilers for Terry Gilliam's 1985 movie, Brazil. If you haven't seen the movie and you want to be surprised, you're going to need to stop the podcast in just a minute or two.

But before you decide to go, spoiler-free,

1:45.5

I'd like to throw in an observation. You might enjoy your first watch of Brazil more if you've

1:51.8

gone through it and heard a discussion about what was going on in advance. This is how I first

1:57.5

experienced it, and it might be why I like it so much. It's a lot to take in.

2:02.3

Having a couple of footholds to get your bearings helps.

2:05.6

Knowing the story in advance is how I go to musicals.

2:08.3

I like to find a good synopsis on Wikipedia and read through the story before I go to something like Hamilton or Wicked.
