And when it comes to strange disappearances, there are few more written about than the mysterious disappearance of someone you might be familiar with.

His name? Why it's Edgar Allen Poe.

You see, in the weeks before his untimely death, Poe went missing for almost a week.

He was traveling from Richmond, Virginia to Philadelphia to do some editing work.

And even without today's instant communications, friends found it strange that no one had seen or heard from him in many days.

The mystery deepened when he reappeared in Baltimore on October 3rd in a terrible condition.

Poe was found by a passerby who noted Poe was delirious, dressed in shabby clothes which weren't his own and lying in a gutter.

He was semi-conscious and unable to move.

He barely managed to tell the passerby of an acquaintance he knew in Baltimore, a doctor which the man summoned to aid Poe.

Four days later, without fully returning to coherent consciousness, Poe died on October 7th, 1849, in Baltimore.

To this day, the cause of Poe's death remains a mystery.

Many theories have been suggested, including Poe being beaten by a ruffian who felt Poe had offended a woman,
