Hey friends, welcome to old-fashioned on purpose, a show where we look at how to stay human

0:11.8

in an artificial world. And we are into episode two of our tiny little short season that I

0:19.2

explained in the last episode. We're going to just doing these two episodes here in December, kind of the end of the year before I take the Christmas break, and then I'll be back the first of the year with hopefully regular episodes. So I took a little bit of a break, actually a lot of a break the last few months. And I explained all of that reason in the episode before this one, so go listen to that. I'm not going to beat a dead horse there. But anyway, today I wanted to talk about something that when I've been kind of expressing where I'm at in life right now and what has changed and what I'm juggling, one of the responses that I got from a lot of you, I got a lot of encouragement, which was lovely and a lot of people saying they're in the same boat. But one of the things

0:57.5

that you kept saying is like, can you pull back the curtain and like, can you explain how you do

1:01.7

the things you do? Because from the outside, it would appear that I have a lot going on.

1:07.6

And actually, I do have a lot going on. We own a restaurant. I own online

1:12.6

businesses. I write books. My husband runs charter school. We have three kids and activities.

1:18.9

We have a lot going on. So people are always like, how do you do this? Like, what's the secret?

1:25.0

And I've talked about it in various forms over the years, but it's always

1:28.0

changing. And I, my perspective on it is always shifting. And so today, I wanted to get into

1:33.0

the honest truth, the nitty gritty of what that looks like to balance or not balance.

1:38.2

I'm going to talk about that in a minute, all of these pieces, because it's probably not what

1:42.9

you think. It's easy to assume and have perceptions from the outside looking in, but it's probably not what you think. It's easy to assume and have perceptions

1:45.6

from the outside looking in, but it's probably not what you think. So I wanted to share that with you today. So we're just going to dive right in. I feel like for the show right now, I don't want to have a lot of structure. I don't want to have fancy intros or outroes. We're just going to go for it. So here we go. Let me pull up my notes, if my computer will allow.

2:03.4

The first piece that I really want to hit home that I feel like people don't understand is not everything I do happens all at once.

2:12.4

So the question and the word that comes up the most is balance. How do you balance? What does balance look like?

2:16.7

And I said this before, but I'll say it again. I don't believe in balance, at least not in that traditional sense. It's just not real. It's not realistic. So I think a lot of times when we think of balancing a schedule or a balancing a life, you're trying to figure out how you have a little bit of everything each day or each week and it all just like works out equally and evenly.

2:35.3

And in my experience that is not the case, there is seasonal balance, but definitely not a daily

2:42.5

or weekly or sometimes even a monthly balance. And so what I mean by that is when I am highly

2:48.3

focused on one thing, then a lot of other things go on the back burner.

2:52.0

So it might look from the outside, like I'm milking the cow and doing the gardens and at the

2:56.0

restaurant and writing the books and, you know, doing all these other business things all at once.
