A seven year old girl goes missing from a Montana campground when the back of her tent is slit open and she is kidnapped. No one sees or hears a thing. Little Susie Jaeger vanishes into thin air, plucked by a shadow.

When clues run thin, he turns to two specialists who newly created the Behaviorial Science Unit at the FBI to explore something called "criminal profiling to try to crack the case".
