Summary

True Crime Tuesday meets Jane Doe #9: How I Survived R. Kelly with guest Lizzette Martinez

Dave & Tim open up with special guest Lizzette Martinez.  In January of 1995, 17-year-old Lizzette Martinez met Grammy-winning musician and record producer R. KELLY at Aventura Mall in Florida where he was performing. At first, it seemed that her hopes of becoming a professional singer were about to come true when he offered to help boost her career. However, this mentorship quickly turned into sexual grooming, leading to years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.

In August 2021, Kelly went on trial in New York on racketeering and sex trafficking charges and was found guilty of all charges.

Tim, when celebrities make the news, it's surprising at times and somehow it is no longer surprising.

2:35.0

As a matter of fact, sometimes they make the news with some halacious and attention grabbing headlines and then kind of vanish into the background.

2:43.0

Which, again, what does that say? Does that say that, well, that's because we're so bored by celebrities? I can't say it's that, right? There's a million networks and news channels that are dedicated to covering news stories and a salacious tales of celebrities.

3:00.0

Or is it that we've just become kind of numb to it? You know, you hear it goes in one ear kind of out the other, like bubblegum, you know, for the brain.

3:07.0

Why do you think there's like that weird disconnect when it comes to that kind of crime?

3:12.0

I think part of it is, is we spend a lot of time covering celebrities. I mean, not only do you have half an hour programs that are dedicated to every single move that celebrities make, but I think we spend so much time going in depth with every little move that celebrities make.

3:29.0

They've been humanized. So I think when they do commit acts that are somewhat infamous, we're titillated by it. We want to know more about it. But it, it, it, to us, is just another human being. I think we've, we've humanized celebrities enough that it doesn't put us in awe anymore.
