nine-year-old Elizabeth Alton spent the afternoon playing outside with Alyssa's younger sister.

The rule was for Elizabeth to return home in time for dinner.

But when Elizabeth didn't return, her mother set out to remind her daughter

that she should have

come home well before now. Mrs. Alton spotted Emma, Alyssa's sister, who had been playing with

Elizabeth and asked her where her daughter was. The six-year-old said that Elizabeth had headed

home a while ago. Alarmed that her daughter was missing, Mrs. Alton called police, and soon a team that included FBI agents had arrived to search the town for the missing nine-year-old.

Emma told police that while the two young girls had been playing, 15-year-old Alyssa had decided to join them.

When other leads failed, attention's turn to the teenager.

It would be during an interrogation that Alyssa would eventually confess to killing Elizabeth.
