Welcome to the Eric Erickson Show podcast, Hour One.

We got a lot to get into today, and well, I got to start with some philosophy and theology, but bear with me because it's tied into all of that at the same time

concurrently it's relevant to all the stuff we've got to talk about so just let's go down the

rabbit hole with me if you will trust me I'm a professional I am capable of doing this

just follow along with me here. We refer to the period from the fall of Rome

in 500s. A.D. until the, really, the renaissance in about 1,500 or so, late 1400s, 50s,

the dark ages into the medieval period. There wasn't a lot of progress in society. What had happened historically is with the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, not the East, the eastern half of the empire was more mystical than the Western half, which was more into reason, which was kind of odd given the Greeks had really set things up for everybody.

But when the West fell, a lot of the knowledge of the Roman Empire

went into the monasteries of the church.

And otherwise society kind of decayed.

And it became very common for the leaders and the masses

to blame everything on spirits and demons. You get food poisoning? Well, it was because the food

was bad. It was because the demons did it or the spirits. It was the spirit world. And it was the unseen realm, and of course you needed to

enable the church to take on the unseen realm. The leadership couldn't. The church had to do it.
