Summary

When Kim’s estranged mother dies, the last thing Melissa expects is for their life together to be overtaken by the past Kim tried so hard to leave behind. Joshua is only a child, newly orphaned and clearly damaged by a strange upbringing. Melissa wants to be patient. She wants to support the woman she loves. But Joshua’s arrival brings more than grief into their home. He brings cloth masks with painted faces, handmade punishment dolls, whispered family rules, and a devotion to customs that should have ended with his mother’s death. At first, Melissa tells herself it is trauma. Then Kim begins to change. Old habits return. Old beliefs take root. The apartment grows smaller by the day, until love, obligation, and fear become impossible to separate. In Jason Fischer’s “Involuntary Dependent,” Horror Hill invites you into a domestic nightmare where family is not just something you inherit. Sometimes, it inherits you.
