This is a little bit of an esoteric topic, and I'm going to admit that going into it,

but it is related to AI and one of the things we're dealing with in the world today.

Megan McArdle has a piece from while I was out on vacation,

why the late show cancellation worries me about the American public.

Now, she's not really upset that Stephen Colbert got canceled, per se.

But let me just read this part to you.

In a survey last year by Statista, about 59% of Americans said they watched linear television that is broadcast cable or satellite shows in the past 12 months, down from 79% five years ago.

That reality is visible in Stephen Colbert's ratings, which declined from 3.1 million viewers in the 2017-18 season to 1.9 million viewers last year, with only a couple

hundred thousand viewers in the critical 18 to 49 segment that advertisers covet. Advertising

dollars similarly fell by about 40 percent, driving the show to a reported $40 million loss.

That and not Colbert's politics is the primary thing you should be thinking about when you ask why the show was canceled.
