Summary

In our first episode since the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes, Lionel Birnie and Graham Willgoss are joined by Brian Nygaard to recap a busy week of racing during this in-between period before attention turns to the third and final grand tour of the season, the Vuelta a España, gets underway later this month.

The week's news has been dominated by the confirmation that Remco Evenepoel will leave Soudal-Quick Step before the end of his contract, transferring to the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe squad at the end of the year. What does it mean for Remco, but also his current and future teams?

We recap the racing from the Clasica San Sebastian to the Tour of Poland plus events in northern Spain and France. Then we look back to the Tour de France and get Brian's perspective on Jonas Vingegaard's performance. The Dane is the outstanding favourite for a Pogačar-free Vuelta but is it time for him to accept that the Tour is out of his reach unless the Slovenian is absent?

Welcome to the cycling podcast's post-tour criterion, doing the rounds with me, Graham Wilgos.

Once more after our own lap of France is Lionel Bernie. And joining us, Il Barone, the Baron,

0:40.1

our expert on all things Danish and beyond. Brian Nygaard.

0:45.6

Lionel, let's start with you because we've not spoken, have we, since our tour experience together?

0:51.2

Well, let's not shatter the illusion, Graham. We've communicated via WhatsApp, but I think I was giving you a break. Three and a bit weeks in the car with me.

0:54.8

Everyone needs a break after that. And yeah, I've been recharging my batteries slightly and I hope you've been doing the same. But post-tor criterion is a good way of putting it. I just wonder, do we have to let Brian win? That's what normally happens, isn't it? The guest star has to win the criterion. No, the superstar actually has to win, isn't that the point?

0:54.2

I'm a solid third. the guest star has to win the criterion. No, the superstar actually has to win, isn't that

1:11.3

the point? That's it. I'm a solid third here. I'm sorry. It's the people's favourite. So it might

1:19.0

have to be a question we put to the people. It's officially cycle to work day here in the UK,

1:24.8

Brian, but none of us have cycled to work, have we? Because we're all doing this remotely for this particular episode. But how are things, where in the world do we find

1:33.9

you? Yeah, so I'm in Learichi, in Liguria, but I've spent the last two days in Kianzzi tending,

1:41.3

a much-needed tending of a vineyard that I haven't really been looking after

1:46.0

during the tour because I've been busy as well, albeit working from home.

1:50.8

So I went there and as the listeners can't see, but my fingers are plastered up because I've

1:57.0

been doing physical labor, something that mainly been doing there on the keyboard during the tour.

2:02.8

So I went and had a good crack at the vineyard just a couple of days, Graham.

2:07.3

Proper manual work for a proper man.

2:10.4

Cycling doesn't stop, though, gents.

2:12.3

And I want to start with one of the bigger stories that broke over the Tour de France,

2:17.4

which Lionel is,

2:19.4

diving back into not quite the musette of news, but more of a whole feedback of news.
