Summary

For Season 12’s top 10 debate, we took a suggestion from Chris Parrott in The Race Members’ Club to rank the biggest F1 heartbreaks of the V10 era. Having then enlisted the help of many more of our members on Patreon in the Bring Back V10s community chat group, a shortlist of crushing moments was created for Glenn Freeman, Ben Anderson, Matt Beer and Edd Straw to put into their own top 10s. Unsurprisingly we were spoilt for choice, so get ready for a lengthy chat that primarily focuses on underdogs who came painfully close to great moments of glory, but also features a few greats who were denied early success before their careers truly took off.

Here at Bring Back V10s, it's fair to say we love an underdog.

0:41.9

But with that love comes the constant risk that any time they flirt with actual greatness,

0:44.2

you might end up getting your heart broken.

0:51.0

So for our top 10 debate in season 12, we took a suggestion from Chris Parrott in the Race Members Club on Patreon to do our top 10 debate on the biggest heartbreaks of the V10 era.

0:57.0

And we even got our members to help put together the list of options we had to choose from.

1:01.3

Once I'd slimmed that list down to 20 of the best options that were put forward,

1:05.8

the usual top 10 process began with me sending the list to Ben Anderson, Ed Straw and Matt Beard.

1:12.2

We all then put together our own top 10s, scored them using the current F1 point system,

1:18.2

and now we're here to debate the combined top 10 based on those scores.

1:23.7

Ed, heartbreaks do tend to lend themselves more to underdogs, so there were quite a few of your favourites on this short list, I would argue.

1:31.6

So how did you find that process? Is it actually painful reliving some of these moments for your unfancied heroes?

1:38.5

Oh, some of these moments live in my mind every day anyway. I have to take one day at a time and deal with them for decades. So it's just

1:45.5

part of the baggage. But yeah, it is an interesting process. And actually, as I'll probably get

1:49.7

into, I did have an initial approach, which was a slightly more academic approach, which is kind of

1:54.6

my normal way of doing things. And then I thought, well, the word heartbreak, you know,

1:58.3

it means something a little bit different. So I revised things a

2:01.7

little bit to approach things slightly differently. And that's what led to my final list. So it was a

2:07.0

slightly different process, I would say, to the usual thing in terms of a bit more emotional,

2:11.6

I guess.
