But first, a history lesson, please.

Let's dive into history.

It's Asculum, the plains of Italy.

It is 279 BC, well before Caesar's even born.

There is no Roman Empire and there are no Roman legions.

There are the armies of the Roman Republic, and they're still a force.

They have not yet developed the Roman legionary tactics and weaponry, but they're still pretty powerful. They haven't developed yet the

phalanx maneuvers and the like, but they're getting there. And what sets them apart

tends to be overwhelming force. And so they meet a king,

Phyrus of a pyrus. Yep, that's his name, Pyrus of a Pyrus. He is king of a pyrus,

and he's motivated to stop the Roman Republican armies surging down the Italian peninsula, taking territory.

And he, Epirus, is in league with Sicily and the Carthaginians and others to stamp out what they see as a

growing Roman threat.

And so they meet on the plains of Asculum, and Pyrus knows the Roman armies like overwhelming

force.

That's how they do it.

And so Pyrus brings all of his troops to bear on the

plains of Asculam, and he beats the Roman legions, well, the Roman armies, wiped them from the

planes of Ascalum. It's a major military victory.

Against a Roman army, many thought was becoming unstoppable.
