Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of a year in the Bible with Daily Grace.

This is Stephanie again your host through the book of Leviticus.

Today we are covering chapter 16, 17 and 18. Let's jump right in.

Chapter 16 goes over the day of atonement. This day was observed annually and it was

considered the holiest of all of Israel's festivals. This is the Jewish holiday called

Yam Kippur. The day of atonement was the one day of the year where the high priest would

enter the holy of holies where the ark of the covenant was. You see, every day the priests

would go to the tabernacle but they stayed outside of the veil. They weren't allowed to enter

inside the veil into the most holy place. The day of atonement was the only time when

the high priest would enter the most holy place and offer a sacrifice that would provide

the covering of sins, both corporately and individually. You may be asking, well, what

about all of the ritual offerings we've been talking about the past week? Here's a

thing. While God ordained regular rituals to atone for Israel's sins, they weren't

enough. There were undoubtedly sins that were forgotten or not confessed. You know how

it goes, right? So the day of atonement was a day set apart for the people to pause

from their work in order to spend time searching their hearts and repenting. It is the only

time the people are called to fast too. That's what it means in verse 29 when it says,

you shall afflict yourselves. And it was those who were genuine in faith who would receive

forgiveness. That was the gift of this day. Verse 30 says, for on this day shall atonement
