host through the book of Genesis, Joanna Kimberl. And today we are talking about Genesis 22 through 24.

Genesis 22 can be a really challenging passage of scripture that can leave us really confused.

But I am actually super excited to talk about it with you today because once we see what God is

revealing to us about His plan to save His people, it is a beautiful story of God's grace.

So God made this huge promise to Abraham, right? To give him a son through whom the promised offspring and

Savior of the world would come. He answered his promise in Isaac and now God tells Abraham to do the

unthinkable. Take your son, your only son whom you love and go to the land of Mariah and offer him

there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. I can only imagine the

confusion, the questions, the pit in his stomach. How could God fulfill his promise if Isaac was dead

before he ever had children of his own? The incredible thing is Abraham obeyed. He got up early

and took Isaac. When Isaac asked where the lamb was for the burnt offering, Abraham stated that

God would provide the lamb. Abraham tied Isaac up, laid him on the altar and lifted the knife.

But just in time, the angel of the Lord called Abraham to stop. God intervened and provided a

substitute, a ram caught in the thickets to take Isaac's place. It can be easy to get caught up in

questions like why would God do this? But we can quickly miss the point. This story is telling us

something remarkable about God's plan of redemption. Isaac was the child of promise, but he pointed

ahead to the true promised offspring, Jesus Christ. Like Isaac, Jesus carried the wood that would

be used for his sacrifice as he bore the cross up the mountain of Calvary. But unlike Isaac,
