Worden is missing. Later that evening, Bernice's son, Frank, returns to town and

The cash register is open, and there are blood stains on the floor.

Alarmed, Frank alerts the authorities.

Plainfield Police inspect Worden's store and come across the last sales receipt.

Police go straight to the Geen home, a two-story white-frame farmhouse sitting on 150 acres of land. The resident is a 51-year-old bachelor and a recluse. In other words, unassuming.

But police never would have predicted what they would find behind the doors of his farmstead.

One of them turned on his flashlight and beamed it around and saw this object that was hanging from the rafters, which at first they thought was some kind of gutted deer.

They realized to their incredible horror that it was a woman's corpse that was hanging by its heels.
