Summary

In a lot of cold cases, the investigators don't know the identity of the killer. When the List family was wiped out, the police knew exactly who killed them. But it would still take them nearly two decades to bring them to justice.

0:06.1	This episode is going to be a little bit different than the other episodes.
0:10.2	In most episodes, we usually try to make the identity of the killer a mystery until the very end.
0:15.8	In this case, there is no secret regarding the identity of the killer.
0:20.8	His name is John E. Mel List.
0:24.8	Even though the police knew the identity of the killer,
0:27.8	it would still almost take two decades for him to be convicted.
0:32.5	So let's go back to when this horrific crime happened.
0:43.3	Okay. back to when this horrific crime happened. It was the second week in November, 1971.
0:46.3	The president was Richard Dixon.
0:49.3	On November 8th, 1971, rock band Led Zeppelin, released their legendary album, Led Zeppelin 4, featuring their best known song, Stairway to Heaven.
1:01.2	The album would go on to sell over 37 million copies worldwide.
1:06.9	When that classic album was released, the Liz family was living in a run-down mansion in Westfield, New Jersey.
1:15.6	Westfield is only about 20 miles from downtown New York City.
1:20.6	46-year-old John List and his 46-year-old wife, Helen, had three children, 16-year-old Patricia, 15-year-old John Jr., and 13-year-old
1:30.6	Frederick. Also living with the family was John's 84-year-old mother, Alma. None of the children
1:39.1	attended school on November 10, 1971. But then, the schools received letters from John List.
1:47.7	He wrote that they were planning on going out of town for several weeks to take care of a relative
1:52.2	who was ill.
1:54.7	After that, no one saw or heard from the family for about a month.
2:00.0	Then the neighbors became concerned.
