UK. On May 5, 1952, the Mercedes Factory Racing Team arrived at the Milamiglia.

They were there to start in their first international race since the 1939 Swiss Grand Prix.

Still recovering from the brutality of World War II, Mercedes had heads their bets for

financial recovery on one man, Rudolph Ulenhout.

With only a small budget and 20 year old designs to build on,

Ullenhout somehow managed to bring the team into the present.

He created a car instantly recognizable to any enthusiast today,

a rounded, low-slung silver body a large grill adorned with the Mercedes

star and doors that looked like the wings of a goal. The car finished second before going

on a dominant run for the rest of the season,

bringing excitement and credibility to a brand that just seven years earlier

had been effectively declared dead. How did Mercedes return to prominence just a decade after the war? How did Rudolf Ulenhout create

the world's first supercar using only parts from the Mercedes parts bin and how did he shape Mercedes

into the brand we know today?
