The appeals process is really completely inadequate to catch cases or wrongful conviction. A lot of people think that, you know, you got convicted something wrong into trial, well, it's going to get caught on an appeal. And it just doesn't work that way. Appeals are not about innocence or guilt. Appeals are about where their technical errors made during the course of their trial were, was there a mistake in admitting or not admitting a certain piece of evidence? But they're not about the overall guilt or innocence of the defendant.

So people often think that, well, this guy couldn't be innocent because he had all those appeals.

And that's just completely wrong.

I had intended to drop this episode of the helpers next week and include my most recent interview with an exonerie this week. However,
