Heather Wilk always thought she would have a problem getting pregnant.

Her parents had struggled to have her, so she knew about fertility trouble.

But the way she pictured it, once she got through whatever hurtles she would face, she'd have kids.

The stereotype of every little girl wanting to have their own baby is very true in my life.

I've always wanted to have the experience of being pregnant and having a baby and breastfeeding

and that whole thing. Heather's 33. She works in nonprofits and she's a lifelong resident of

Indianapolis. A couple years ago, Heather and her husband Rob tried to start their family.

We were doing all of the calendaring and special whatever, everything that is out there to help

you get pregnant. We were doing that. Do you have one of the bracelets and all that stuff?

Test strip, yeah, being on strips constantly. Nothing was working and so after six months,

I was completely convinced that there was something wrong. The general recommendation for women

under 35 is to try for a year before seeking treatment. But Heather had her hunch. It just seemed

really dumb to me to wait when I knew that they could do a test that could tell us, oh, everything

looks fine. Keep trying. Or no, this isn't going to work. You need a different option. Why wait

and waste time if this wasn't going to work naturally. Her best friend was already going through

fertility treatment. So she made an appointment at that same clinic. I had to fill out all of this

paperwork and there's a slot that says kind of like, is there anything else you'd like to share?

There was something. When Heather's parents were going through their fertility treatment in 1985,

they saw a well-known doctor in Indianapolis. That doctor's name was Donald Klein.

They were told that Klein would be using a medical resident. We now know Klein

jacked himself off, used his own sample and squirted it into my mom.
