Summary

BONUS EPISODE: It's series finale time, and to celebrate #BringBackV10s taking a temporary break before series 2, we're answering more of your questions about F1 from 1989-2005. Mark Hughes and ex-F1 technical director and car designer Gary Anderson join Glenn Freeman to discuss a range of topics, including: What made Kimi Raikkonen so good at McLaren, and why did he struggle to recapture that magic in the years that followed; how out of control F1's 'driver aids' era of the early 1990s would have got if the rules weren't tightened up; why Gary had to get drunk with Stefano Modena to prove he didn't hate him; how Eddie Irvine made his mark on his F1 debut before getting punched by Ayrton Senna; why Gary joined the group of teams sprouting the hideous X-wings in 1998; Jacques Villeneuve's stunning qualifying margin of 1.7 seconds in the 1997 Australian Grand Prix, Martin Brundle's transition from F1 driver to top-line pundit and commentator; Allegations of Benetton running traction control in 1994; Mika Hakkinen's disappointing final season, and what we'd bring back (other than V10s!) from this era to improve modern F1.

Keep your questions and episode suggestions coming in to @wearetherace on social media using #BringBack V10s, and we'll update you very soon on when series two will launch! Thanks for listening to everything we've done so far, and please tell your friends what they've been missing out on.

Welcome to the final episode of the first series of Bring Back V10s brought to you by the race.

0:12.0

We bolted an 11th episode onto our planned first run of 10 because we've had so many questions from you about the V10 era of F1,

0:20.0

and we want to answer

0:21.2

as many of them as possible.

0:23.1

I'm Glenn Freeman, and for our final episode, for now at least, because we will be back

0:27.7

with a second series later in the year, we're rolling out the big guns.

0:31.8

Mark Hughes is back, and I'm delighted to welcome Gary Anderson to the show to make his

0:36.5

bring back V10's debut.

0:38.7

Better late than never, Gary, and we couldn't go for a whole series about F1 from 1989 to

0:43.7

2005 without having you join us at some point.

0:47.6

Given the significance this era had on your career, is this a time in F1 you look back on fondly?

0:52.9

Yes, as I mean, you know, the cars then were,

0:55.7

you're probably looking at a lot simpler than what they are currently.

0:59.0

They were real racing cars, you know, they made lots of noise,

1:01.7

and they produced lots of horsepower, lots of RPM.

1:05.8

You know, we're talking, the V10 here, it was 20,000 RPM

1:09.6

and probably knocking 1,000 horsepower here and there.

1:12.6

So really good, really good period of time.

1:16.0

I think everybody enjoyed that period really because the technology came on hugely,

1:20.2

but it still was a time whenever, you know, there were nuts and bolts, I suppose you might call it.

1:24.9

They weren't too sophisticated, but they were like real thoroughbred racing cars. We'll count that as our traditional opening question for this week

1:32.3

and cracked straight on with the questions. And Mark, I'll come to you with the first one because
