Edward Lawrence Shefflin was a prospector

and US Army scout stationed in Arizona in the 1870s.

Back then, many folks were seeking the promise of silver ore in the area,

but Ed Shefflin was described as much more determined

and much more rugged than the rest.

In 1876, David P. Lansing of Phoenix, Arizona,

described Shefflin as about the strangest specimen

of human flesh I ever saw.
