My children had their own experiences too.

The one that stands out most happened to my eldest when he was 16.

That day, I'd been curled up on my bed completely absorbed in a book.

My husband came in and insisted I join him at the hardware store to choose fence paint.

I didn't want to go. I just wanted to read, but he was persistent, so I went. The whole time we were at,

I kept thinking about my book, wishing I were at home back in my room. When we returned,

my eldest came out to greet us. As I rounded the corner from the carport, he stopped dead

in his tracks. His face went pale. He stared at me like he'd seen a ghost.

How did you get outside? he asked. I told him I'd just come back from the store. He looked shaken.

But I just saw you, he said. You were sitting on your bed, reading. I passed your room. You said hello, and you looked up and smiled.

He hadn't known I'd gone out.

He'd seen me clear as day, exactly in the place where I'd wished to be.

It frightened him deeply, and I've often wondered if my intense desire to be home had

somehow manifested a version of me, a doppelganger,

a trace of thought made visible.
