Summary
It never fails to surprise us when we realize we’ve never talked about a really classic trope even now…eight years in. This week, we’re talking about kids in romance—which we’ve somehow never done before?! We’re covering Romance Babies, Romance Kids, and Single Parents in Romance — but so sorry to the Secret Baby lovers out there, that one deserves its own episode (someday). We’re talking babies, toddlers and teens, the appeal of the single parent romance novel, and that one Erin St. Claire book that Sarah can’t get out of her head.
If you want more Fated Mates in your life, or you want to talk more about Romance Babies/Kids, please join our Patreon, which comes with an extremely busy and fun Discord community! Our next read along is The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie by Jennifer Ashley. Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple Books or wherever you get your books.
Notes
- The Silhouette Intimate Moments line eventually turned into Harlequin Romantic Suspense. Erin St. Claire is one of Sandra Brown’s many pen names.
- Wet nurses have been around for a very long time, baby bottles not so much. I say this only because Sarah said “Bottle service” and that’s something different.
- Red ink has been around for a long time, actually. So maybe that’s how Sophie had access to it during the Regency?
- So there’s not a whole lot of evidence that birthmarks are hereditary. Shocking, I know.
Sponsors
- The Romantasy Letters, a new kind of romantic fantasy storytelling, delivered right to your door twice monthly. Use the code FATED to get 20% off your year's subscription. Learn more at RomantasyLetters.com.
- LJ Andrews, author of Heir of Twisted Lies, available in print or ebook. Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple Books, or wherever you get your books.
- Neyha Liu, author of Midnight at Soulfield, available in print or ebook, or with your monthly subscription to Kindle Unlimited.

| 0:00.0 | Well, Jen, this morning, I said, Eric, we're recording tonight, or this afternoon or this morning, we're not, whatever time it is, whatever time of day it is that we're recording everyone. And he said, what are recording? And I said, we're doing romance baby. He said, you're going to, you're going to recommend some books today? And I mean, an attack. An absolute attack. Like we don't, I was at a dinner this week and a woman asked me, was very sweet, asking me questions about the podcast. And she was like, and how many books do you recommend like every week? And I said, oh, I don't know, probably on average, like, eight to ten. And then I realized, she was like, oh, I'm going to go listen and I realize like it was |
| 0:38.0 | Romance Wardrobe Week. And I was like, oh, you're not, yeah, not this week. There are books |
| 0:44.8 | we mentioned. It's fine. I know everybody. Eric just likes to really like take the piss, |
| 0:50.4 | as they say. But we are going to recommend books today. So ha. It's going to be great. |
| 0:57.6 | And I was thinking, Jen, there's a reason why we're doing it this week. And like I asked for this topic. |
| 1:03.2 | And then I couldn't remember the book that made me ask for this topic. So here we are. |
| 1:07.3 | A classic faded mates episode coming your way is what we're trying to say, |
| 1:12.9 | everyone. We should talk about how that all works. But first of all, welcome to fate of mates, |
| 1:18.0 | everyone. I'm Sarah McLean. I read romance novels and I write them. And I'm Jennifer Procop, |
| 1:23.0 | a romance reader and editor. And here, listen, sometimes I do think, maybe we've talked about this before, but like I do think it's really funny. So basically here's how it works, everyone. We just read all the time and then romance is in our brains. And then one of us will say, we should do. And in this case, Sarah said, we should do single parents. This is a couple weeks ago. Like sometimes we... Yeah, I wanted to do a single parent episode. Yeah. And I was kind of... And I don't remember exactly what happened how... But like, within minutes... Guess what's not sexy. Yeah. The words single parent. Exactly. Well, in fact, then I think I'm going to tell this really funny story before in a minute. |
| 2:05.7 | But like basically quickly, I was like, so basically what we're doing is, and Sarah said, |
| 2:07.3 | romance, baby. And we, like, basically, like, completely lost our shit. |
| 2:12.3 | And we're like, yeah, we should definitely do that. |
| 2:15.0 | And so then what happens is we go to our corners and think about our feelings. |
| 2:20.8 | And usually for me, that's like a books just bubble up to the surface or I have ideas and I try and like jot them down all in the same place. |
| 2:27.9 | Sometimes I don't. You'd think I'd use my phone for that. But what is the joy in that when you could instead have several pieces of paper |
| 2:35.1 | all over your house and or workplace with little notes on them? I mean, we're very, I'm glad to know |
| 2:41.0 | that you are also sort of disorganized in this way because I don't know how we do this. And then, |
| 2:46.3 | you know, here we are, right? But the fun, here's like a really funny story about, like, romance baby. |
| 2:53.8 | And I guess I want to say the other thing. |
| 2:55.6 | I started going down a deep depressing road about romance baby. |
| 2:58.7 | And then I was like, no, romance baby is only for fun topics. |
