Summary

We begin the season by delving into Sophie Hartman’s 2016 memoir about her time in Zambia, Crowns of Beauty, where we learn about how a young woman from Michigan came to be the adopted mother of two Zambian girls by the age of 25. We learn about Sophie’s deep roots in evangelical Christianity and her state of mind prior to and during the adoptions of M and C; examining the way she portrays herself as both a martyr and savior. 0:56.9	then. I had just had a baby and had a new book coming out. And this was around the time that
1:02.1	Munchausen by proxy was really entering my work life. The month that this story aired, I'd done my
1:08.1	very first interview about my own family story for Vanity Fair, and this was
1:12.3	followed by an appearance on a local station about my third novel, We Came Here to Forget.
1:17.2	This was all taking place amid the second investigation into my sister for Munchausen
1:21.9	Biproxy abuse of her children. By the middle of that summer, the courts would return my sister's children to her.
1:28.6	And a few months after that, the prosecuting attorney would make the decision not to file charges against my sister, Megan Carter, despite the horrifying and voluminous evidence against her.
1:39.6	But back to Sophie.
1:41.2	In general, seeing stories about sick kids in the news is upsetting for a bunch
1:45.3	of reasons. So family friends are banding together. They're trying to raise money. And this is
1:50.1	something that is, you know, no little ask. We're talking about like $60,000 for a vehicle
1:55.3	for them. So we just wanted to put their positive energy out there.
2:02.7	Of course, there are the particular fears and questions that I bring to it,
2:06.8	given my experience with my sister.
