Summary

A fleeting bonus episode of TCF as Eddie stays up to join Andrew and look back on day one of the Ryder Cup. It was a day where Europe dominated and remarkably both Scottie Scheffler nor Bryson Dechambeau returned null points for the USA. We did wait for our regular special guest to turn up, but sadly we're still waiting. There is, however, a brief cameo appearance from Ken Brown.

Well, hello and welcome to the chipping forecast at the end of day one of the Ryder Cup.

0:20.5

Well, I like to think that Samuel Ryder,

0:22.4

who came up with the idea and finance the very first competition

0:25.8

in the Ryder Cup, who was a seed merchant by trade,

0:28.9

would have just thought how mighty things have grown

0:32.6

from the modest beginnings.

0:34.1

You know, when the match between American and British professionals,

0:38.3

he would have smiled in wonder to see that his modest idea has grown into the occasion it is now, where

0:43.6

the best of Europe and their cousins from across the Atlantic would meet in competition,

0:48.6

watched by the adoring thousands who called out in their admiration, You Suck, Wanker, and

0:54.0

trees f***er to SEP Strka as he prepared to head a drive. Eddie Pepprell, I don't know why I started on that, I've given myself a very early edit to do, but basically you could have edited that you could have beeped out quite a lot of what was going on today. We'll come to that in a moment. But Eddie

1:10.9

Pepperl, who has known competition at Bethpage back in 2019, what did you make of it all?

1:17.0

I mean, a great day for Europe. A great day for Europe could have been, I think, a day if

1:22.7

we had a hold the pot on the last, where the lead would have been insurmountable.

1:34.6

I think it's still going to give the US team a little bit of hope overnight the fact that he missed that part and it's what five and a half, two and a half as opposed to six two.

1:37.7

Yeah, but here's stats for you.

1:41.2

Just quickly, stats, we have a little think about things.

1:45.3

The team leading at the end of day one has gone on to win the last five Ryder Cups. So that goes back to Medina when USA led 5'3. Europe have won on the last six

1:52.6

occasions that they have led after day one, 2002, 4, 6, 14, 18, 23. So the last time Europe led after day one and went on to lose was when they led

2:04.5

6-2 after day one. So similar to this time in 1999 at Brookline. So everything at the moment

2:12.3

points towards Europe winning. But I don't know, but I think you're right. Five and a half,

2:17.2

two and a half just sounds, feels a bit different to six two. I think so, that being said, having watched Days with the Golf, I do think the European team, and I don't want to come across as overconfident of the back of one day, I think they are going to probably still walk away, run away with this. Their team, they're just such a superior team. Their big players have shown up, whereas the US team haven't. And the big, and the Scheple did not show up today. No points. Bryson, no points. I mean, it's, um, whereas Brahm was an absolute giant today, as was Tommy. Justin showed up at the end when he needed to. Rory was fantastic.
