Summary

This week we're looking at the greatest joke of all: death. More specifically, the twenty-two deaths that occur over the course of the Netflix series Russian Doll. Jesse talks to Leslye Headland, the show's co-creator, writer and director, about the protagonist Nadia's (Natasha Lyonne) journey episode-by-episode, and the significance behind each death she experiences. The show uses death to explore overcoming trauma and self-destructive behaviors under a deeply dark yet comedic veil. Just a heads-up, this episode's going to spoil the entire plot of the show. So if you haven't seen it yet, we're recommending you go watch the show now. Also included: Natasha Lyonne says "cockroach" funny. Follow Leslye on social media. Fulcher Senior Editor, Jesse David Fox. Each episode, at least usually, more than that later, we have a

guest on to play one of their jokes and discuss how and why it came together.

In a way, today's episode is about one joke, the cosmic joke, that is the fact that we all die.

0:34.0

That's because our guest is Leslie Hedlund, co-creator and showrunner of Russian doll.

0:38.0

Truth is, this is not going to be a traditional episode of Good One.

0:45.0

Yes, at the core we're talking about one joke, which is kind of more like a runner,

0:49.0

as that joke happens over 20 times over the course of Russian Dolls first season.

0:54.0

Yeah, we're going to focus on every single death on the show, which is like the whole show.

If you want to see for yourself, Volchry actually made a super cut of all the deaths,

1:03.0

which we linked to in the show notes, and we'll also post with the episode on vulture.com itself.

1:08.0

So if you haven't seen Russian doll, I really, really, really suggest you rectify that.

1:15.0

First, it's great and you'll like it,

1:16.9

but also because this interview might, not might, will,

1:19.6

be kind of spoilery and at minimum,

1:21.7

just really thorough. If you have seen it, great, you'll love this

1:25.2

conversation. As Leslie walks me through the whole arc of the season offering just so much

1:30.2

insight on what is happening for the characters and why. But to summarize in it,

Natasha Leon plays Nadia, a tortured video game designer with a taste for destructive behavior,

1:40.0

who's celebrating her 36th birthday at a party thrown by her friend.

1:43.0

The problem is she keeps on dying, and increasingly and then decreasingly absurd ways.

1:48.0

And after each time she goes back to that party,
