But right now, as we look at multiple challenges around the globe, whether it's the 38 war planes that flew over Taiwan over the weekend,

or whether it was what was happening with the buildup of over 100 Russian troops, 100,000 Russian troops around the border of the Ukraine,

whether it was 8,500 American military men and women who are being mobilized to go into one of our neighboring NATO nations.

This is a foreign policy crisis by Vladimir Putin's doing.

Are we handling it the right way?

A man that had this portfolio in his hand is the former Secretary of State and he joins us now Mike Pompeo.

But Secretary, welcome back.

Great to be with you, Brian. Thanks for having me on this morning.

First off, was this predictable that when you were there, did you sense that the Russians were getting impatient with the outreach of the Ukrainians to a degree to the West?

Yes, Brian. It's absolutely the case that Vladimir Putin has made clear that a democracy on his western border was not something he was fired up about.

He wanted control. He wanted political control. He's used political and economic tools to do that for an awfully long time.

Frankly, since the Soviet Union fell apart, they've tried to bring Ukraine back into the old Warsaw Pact alliance state.

So that part's not new. What's different is I think he sensed a feeble administration.

And so he's begin to use this course of power in different ways that he would have done with President Trump.

It's just we had a policy around the world, which made clear.
