European nations said today that they will recognize a Palestinian state on May 28th

and hoped other countries would follow suit.

Ireland, Spain and Norway claim the decision is aimed at speeding up efforts to secure a ceasefire in Israel's war with Hamas.

in taking this important step in the coming weeks.

The news was welcomed by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, which prior to October were the

two main governing bodies for Palestinians, but Israeli officials say the actions amount to rewarding Hamas terrorists for the October 7th attack that sparked the current war in Gaza.

In response, Israel ordered the immediate return of its ambassadors in Ireland, Spain, and Norway,

just the latest sign of strained relations between the Jewish state and Europe.

Around 144 of the 193 member states of the United Nations recognize a Palestinian state, but only a handful of the 27

EU members have done so formally, mostly former communist countries.

Russia reportedly launched a counter space weapon into orbit last week.
