New Jersey President seeks U.S. support to reverse the coup's economic fallout.

New Jersey's elected president, Mohammed Bazoum, has urged the U.S. and the rest of the

world to help restore constitutional order after last week's coup.

The country has been subject to unprecedented sanctions.

The price of rise there is now up by 40% and there's been rolling blackouts in major cities.

Writing in the Washington Post, New Jersey's president warned that the entire Sahel region

in Africa could fall under Russian influence.

The BBC's Africa correspondent, Catherine Berahanga, has more.

He starts this piece by saying I write this as a hostage.

He defends his record, he says, through having closed ties to France, the United States,

his government was able to hold back an Islamist insurgency in his country.

He is very open-ended in his statement.

He says, well, can the international community come and help us?

He doesn't say how.

What we've seen in the last few days is the European Union,

other Western governments cutting aid,

but there will be growing questions about whether this is actually impacting

the ordinary civilians rather than the military.
