and that goes down very well with young people, especially young men. I'm Jess Smith, and here's the news you need to start your day. Russia and China are trying to wrap up a deal for a pipeline that would bring gas from Western Russia to China.

Russia needs China's market for its gas that once went to Europe,

but negotiations have stalled because of Beijing's hard bargaining.

According to F.T. sources, Beijing wants to pay low prices for the gas,

and it wants to commit to buying only a fraction of the pipeline's annual capacity.

Russia insists it's confident there will be an agreement,

but the impasse shows Moscow's increasing dependence on China
