For art to appear, we must disappear, so says scholar and musician Stephen Nachmanovich at the creative process. That's also true of reading when I dig into a good

novel. I'm not just seeing sentences, but conjuring

images and travelling through worlds. And today, we're going on a visual literary journey,

from ERA cinematic thrillers to the interplay of writing and the photographic image. And to top it

off, we'll look at a new way to support independent booksellers. We begin though with a novel about to be turned

into images, having been already snapped up by Netflix for its thrilling filmic qualities.

Leave the World Behind is Romano Lam's third novel. It's generated a massive buzz in the US

and been shortlisted for a national book award. It arrives on our shows just as various lockdown restrictions are in place

and its unsettling themes really chime with our current collective anxiety.
