Summary

In this episode we talk about the design rules we break and the rules that aren't really rules at all. We went to school to learn all the rules, so we can know when and why to break them. We talk about upper cabinet doors vs open shelving and the rules we follow around fireplace hearths. We talk about putting area rugs on carpet. When to do it and why. We discuss other space planning rules including what to do when you have a shorter ceiling in terms for good balance and scale. We feel strongly that rules were meant to be broken, just do it right. And you’re just like, ‘Whoa!’ ...I think by knowing these rules and how to break them, and studying these spaces, I think that everyone on this that’s listening can get closer to that type of look, and should.” 28:47 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. It's a new year guys.

0:37.8

And I just want to give people permission to go ahead and break them too.

0:40.7

Yeah, we're going to tell you some of the ones that we break consistently and I think one of our

0:46.0

designers said a great when we were talking about this on Monday that you go to school we learn all the rules so

0:52.1

that we can then break them in the correct way.

0:55.0

So, yep, that's what we're going to show you.

0:58.0

Yes, okay, so we're going to start out with a question.

1:01.0

This is from one of our listeners her name Stephanie Denise Durham and

1:05.2

she wants to know our opinion on the upper cabinet doors do you think they're

1:09.7

making a comeback or still out for the count this year.

1:13.4

So Susan and I are both smiling.

1:16.7

It actually is a good question.

1:18.0

I think what she's referring to is the fact that a lot of people are doing

1:21.3

open shelving. She's saying doors, cabinet doors. So I think she's

1:25.1

referring to people having the cabinet boxes hung so you can see your dishes in there but no doors on them.

1:35.9

Maybe she means open shelving. Maybe people aren't putting cabinet doors on but I would say that that's probably not a trend.

1:41.5

Not a trend. Open shelving I would say is a trend. trend. Open shelving, I would say is a trend, something that we're like, we've embraced.
