Summary
My guest today is Bill Mims, a graduate of Full Sail University in the Recording Engineering program. In 2001, he spent a year in Orlando doing live sound, as well as an internship at a post production facility before moving to LA in 2002 and getting hired by Sunset Sound where he worked his way up the ranks and was an assistant engineer by the end of 2004. He became proficient in Pro Tools, as well as analog tape machines. Between 2004 and 2010, Bill worked with some of the most famous artists in the world at Sunset Sound.
Bill left Sunset and went freelance in 2011. Since then, he has done engineering and producing work for many artists. He has been lucky enough to have been a part of many Grammy winning projects, two of which Bill earned statues for (Jimmy Cliff-Best Reggae 2012 and Ben Harper/Charlie Musselwhite-Best Blues 2013). Bill has worked on several films, two of which have either won or been nominated for an Oscar (The Theory Of Everything-Best Original Music Score 2015, Sicario-Nominated for Best Original Music Score 2016). Bill has also worked on TV shows, including Transparent, which has won Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Some recent work includes Mrs. America, For Life, and When They See Us.
Recent albums would be the last few Morrissey albums, Death Cab, and I produced 2 albums for Megan Mullally.
Thanks so much to Howard Willing for making our introduction.

| 0:00.0 | This episode of Recording Studio Rockstars is brought to you by OWC, Spectra-1964, |
| 0:06.5 | Sample, Isotope, Sonar Works, and API. |
| 0:10.4 | In fact, you're hearing my voice right now on the Spectra-1964 STX-100 micprie |
| 0:16.2 | in an API lunchbox mixed carefully through isotope RX and ozone. All recorded safely onto an OWCSSSD, |
| 0:25.2 | so get ready to rock. That's another point too that I've tried to pass along to guys under me |
| 0:31.5 | at sunset is zero that thing out, especially the trims, the line and mic trims up top. If the guy before them |
| 0:39.0 | is up there and they've boosted that mic line trim up top and it's, you know, it's like 12 db hot, |
| 0:43.6 | everything coming in that channel is going to sound like crap, it's going to sound distorted. So to me, |
| 0:46.8 | that that's an important thing, just even, you know, just the basic stuff. It's like just |
| 0:50.2 | zero it out. |
| 1:11.5 | Yeah. created to help you become a rock star of the recording studio. |
| 1:21.4 | Before your band hits the studio, it's smart to have all the songs and notes in one place, |
| 1:24.1 | but setting up a shared cloud folder can be frustrating. |
| 1:27.7 | There's always someone in the band who can't seem to log in or wants to use a different platform. Sample.com makes it easy to add collaborators to a project so that the whole |
| 1:33.5 | band can upload new songs and make comments before the session. It's file sharing that was |
| 1:38.4 | specifically built for music. Just upload a voice memo or song and start commenting. Sign up for your free account with two projects now at sampli.app, |

| 1:57.0 | Want to know how I get a consistent sound quality mixing hundreds of episodes of recording studio rock stars? |
| 2:03.6 | Well, I've been cheating all along by using isotope, RX, and ozone on every single episode. |
| 2:09.9 | Right now, you're hearing RX, declick, declip, D.S, deplosive, voice de-noise, ozone ozone multi-band compression, EQ, and limiting on this podcast episode. |
