I'm Mark Stephen. I'm holding a small block of wood in my hand.

It's about six inches long, three inches wide, maybe an inch thick. At first glance you wouldn't think there was anything special about this, but this is teak.

And this particular bit came off a massive bulk of timber,

one of Upton that spent the guts of 90 years under the Arisee in the wreck of a ship called the

SS Pegu. Now finding timber of this quality, this age, and in such quantity, roughly 80 tons of

the stuff, is a unicorn event it is

vanishingly rare so although this might look like a scrap of wood to you and me to maritime

conservators the kind of people who are trying to conserve ships like the cutty sark or nelson's
