modern Britain. Until her great-great-granddaughter surpassed her, Queen Victoria held the title

as the longest-reigning monarch and guided Britain through the 19th century in an age

of empire and dramatic expansion. And it's worth taking a look at both Queen Elizabeth

II and Queen Victoria as mothers and daughters themselves to add depth to understand their reigns.
