Summary

In 2017, Jesse recorded a live episode of Good One with Roy Wood Jr. at the Just For Laughs Festival in Toronto. The bit that they discussed was "Black Patriotism?", from Roy's 2017 special Father Figure. Roy reveals the staggering amount of live comedy he watches in order to ensure his material is truly his own. He's a brilliant comedic strategist who understands that for a joke to truly be funny, it needs to be funny everywhere--even in front of the people it pokes fun at. Also included: Roy recounts working with Ron Jeremy. Watch Roy's latest special No One Loves You on Comedy Central. Follow Roy on Twitter. This episode originally aired on November 19, 2017. This week's archival episode is with Roy Woy Woy Jr, but first an anecdote.

So I produced these live comedy shows with Pat Malachmy of Top Chef, I know a lot of that

0:28.6

sentence is weird, but it is true. So we've done it twice, two shows a night, and they've raised a lot of money for some really great causes.

It's easily one of the best things I've been lucky to be a part of.

Also, the lineups are amazing, and Roy Wood Jr. has performed at both so I was backstage running things at the

off stage after essentially doing great and I was like that was great. To

0:52.4

paraphrase he explains it was good but the problem

0:55.3

is that he started with a sort of cynical joke in charity show comedy audiences he says don't

0:59.7

respond well to negative jokes. They don't want that energy. He said he'll figure it out for the next show and he went off to a section of backstage that no one else was and sort of paced around.

Later, before it's said in the second show, he said he figured it out.

1:12.8

He has this video game thing that he'll open with.

1:15.1

It will work with this audience as they are younger and nerdier.

1:18.8

And it did.

1:19.6

He killed.

1:20.3

It was something to behold.

1:22.3

I tell this story, because hopefully it gives you a real sense of who Roy is as a comedian,

1:26.5

deliberate, thoughtful, and just so damn good at the art and job of being a stand-up comedian.

1:32.0

The results are clear in his act, which you'll hear a

1:34.0

particularly classic bit from his 2017 special father figure and his ability to talk

1:38.6

about it. Side note his 2019 special no one loves you is truly next level he really is one of the best
