The ads look real and appealing, but experts say beware of apartment hunting on social media apps like Instagram and TikTok.

Many of these videos we found are posted by scammers, impersonating real agents and manipulating real listings.

Fraudsters repost videos on bogus accounts, claiming to have rents far below market rate, all with the

intent of luring potential renters to send an application fee quickly before the deal disappears, a growing

scam according to FBI data. That'd be really easy to fall for. One of my kids did once.

Yeah. It was insidious. When I was looking for houses and stuff like that, both renting and buying,

you had to jump on it so fast, I could easily, it's just luck that I didn't do that.

Right. And one design of these scams is you don't go for the big ask. You get a huge number of people or just that good number of people to kick you at 25 bucks.

That's the application fee. And then you move on to the next scam.

Or you send out another wave of those emails.

It doesn't cost you anything.

Change your address or PO box or whatever that.

Or there's old-fashioned smash something with a hammer and steal it.
