So we're not in the situation that they were in in the old covenant, in the Old Testament,

when they were under the Torah.

Why were they under the Torah then? Well, because the

Torah was that system for managing sin. Christ hadn't dealt with sin yet. Christ hadn't died and risen

again yet. No one was baptized. So what St. Paul has just described had not happened for anybody

in the Old Testament. And so they had the Torah as a way to manage sin,

or sins to speak more properly, right, to manage sins,

to make it so that they could keep the camp and the tabernacle

and the temple, you know, clean enough and holy enough that God didn't have to leave.

And that's what ultimately happened,

is eventually the wickedness in Israel became so great that God left, and then the enemies came in

and destroyed it and took them into exile. So that's what the Torah was for, if they had followed

it, right, would have been to manage that so that God could stay. But it wasn't really dealing

with the problem. It wasn't dealing with death. It really dealing with the problem. It wasn't dealing with

death. It wasn't dealing with sin. It was just sort of doing upkeep. It's like if you had a window

with no glass in it in your house, and you got up every morning and swept up all the dust and dirt

and leaves that blew in through it, right? And you do that every single day.
