Summary

With the dust just beginning to settle after Britain's decision to leave the European Union, we thought we'd take the opportunity to look at our relationship with politics. Was Jesus political? Should Christians engage in party politics, or be a prophetic voice from the margins? We bring these, and many other questions to political theologian Roger Mitchell. So tune in for an insightful and challenging conversation!

If you want more from Roger, check out his books The Fall of the Church and Discovering Kenarchy: Contemporary Resources for the Politics of Love.

"The gospel itself is political from the word go - if you come saying the empire of God is at hand when clearly the great issue is the empire of Rome has occupied the nation, then clearly, this is a political statement.” - Roger Mitchell

Welcome back to Nomad podcast. My name's Tim Nash. Dave. That's right. No Wardo for this interview.

He said something about having to work for a living, needing to put food on the table,

shoes on his kids' feet. I don't know. I wasn't really listening. A bit of a lack of a commitment

to you, the beloved listening, if you asked me. But he will be trying to wing his way over to the

spare bedroom after work to record a reflection.

0:39.2

So yeah, it's me on my own recording some more podcastering ponderances.

0:43.7

I seem to recall at the end of last episode with P.N. that we would be having Brian Draper up next.

0:50.3

Now, I knew I shouldn't have said that. I sensed it at the time that that was rash.

0:53.6

Brian Draper will be with us in a couple of weeks. Instead, we're tentatively dipping

0:57.8

our nomadic toes into the life-giving, grace-filled, hope-laden, joy-inducing waters of religion

and politics. That's right. There's nothing that brings peace and joy to digital media,

1:09.0

like some good old-fashioned political commentary. So we thought we'd throw caution to the wind and our downloading figures in the trash

1:14.4

and talk politics. For our overseas listeners, there's quite a lot been going on in old

blighty. As Lenin once said, there are decades when nothing happens and there are weeks when

1:24.6

decades happen. And that's never been more true than in British politics over the last few weeks and months. For those of you don't know, Britain has had a referendum.

1:33.2

We've had a chance to cast our vote on whether we want to be part of the European Union or not.

1:38.6

And it was a process that revealed, I think, positives and negatives. Positively, traditionally, politics and religions are quite private matters for us, Brits.

1:47.8

But everyone became really politically engaged, vote turnout was really high,

1:51.7

everyone had an opinion, everyone started watching the news and reading newspapers.

1:55.8

But negatively, politicians were involved.

1:58.9

And let's just say there was no small amount of fear-mongering, cynicism, dirty tricks and outright lies.
