My guest, director, writer, Rodrigo Garcia, got his start as a camera operator and cinematographer,

working with directors from Alfonso O'Rourou, Alfonso Cuaron, Mike Nichols,

moving into directing himself with things you can tell just by looking at her,

10 little love stories, nine lives, mother and child, and many TV shows, including In Treatment, Carnival.

His newest film is director and co-writer is Albert Knob's.

We're out of time, Rodriguez, because I've taken so much time introducing you here.

You know, I was in a car with someone yesterday, and they asked me,

how long have you been in the film business, and I found myself flabbergasted to say 30 years.

You know, I guess 30 years is not what it used to be.

Not for you anyway.

Well, one of the things I've always wanted to ask you, and we've known each other for a while

is what was like sitting as a DP working and seeing Quarone and Arrau and Mike Nichols direct what you got from watching

those guys work?

You know, at that period in my life, I was doing two things.

I was a DP on independent movies and on HBO movies.

And I was also working as a camera operator, mostly with Chivo Lubeski, who's a terrific

D.P. People know him as Emmanuel Lubeski.

This year he has the tree of life.

And I worked with him as an operator.
