Hello and welcome to rock and roll politics, the podcast with me, Steve Richards.

And this being the kind of bank holiday week, the last week of the summer recess for Westminster MPs.

We tend to do something a bit special and this year is no exception. We recorded a great expense. The last of my Edinburgh shows, which took place, it all seems so long ago already,

last Saturday. And so that's what this podcast will be, the last show for everybody. The Patreon subscribers got the opening

show as well. So this is the sort of arc from beginning to end. There were 14 shows, each one of

them completely different, different themes. And I told you about some of the themes in the first

week and this sort of half-time podcast last week.

And the following week was really, a really interesting range of themes.

We, the suggestion of one of our listeners, Kenny Brown, did the too difficult to-do theme.

Why is it that there are some policy areas that are staring in front of our eyes

to be done? And yet it appears impossible for them to be done. And that was great. We had a

brilliant contribution that day from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who's in the audience,

who gave an example of U-ES and clean air in London,

as something that was done. He was warned it would cost him the mayoral election. He'd got on and did it.

And that is a model in a way of some of the other too difficult to do issues, whether it's

climate change, high-speed rail, social care. So that was very interesting. We did,

partly based on an article I've written for the new statesman, looked at the decline of political

oratory and all the energy that went with the great orators from only a few decades ago.

It's a relatively recent decline and why it mattered.

I think the whole audience was, we were all in agreement.
