Summary

In this week's episode I explore the Prime Ministers we never had. All the factors that blocked them apply to Boris Johnson making it much less likely that he will be the next PM. In connection with Boris' fate I also reflect on my next BBC series of unscripted TV talks on the theme of 'PMs We Never Had' and why ad libbing to camera in a single take is a good way-in my view- of conveying the drama and epic significance of politics.

Hello and welcome to rock and roll politics, the weekly podcast with me, Steve Richards.

0:16.0

And today we're going to look at the leadership chances of Boris Johnson, but we're going to do it through a slightly different prism to the normal kind of speculation about his chances of becoming the next prime minister in the next 10 minutes, next 12 months or whatever.

0:32.6

I've been recording another series of talks for the BBC, these unscripted talks that I do on various

0:40.9

themes. I've done a couple of series already, one on modern prime ministers from Harold Wilson

0:47.1

to David Cameron. I think maybe Theresa May got in there as well, although that one inevitably

0:53.0

had an unfinished quality to it.

0:55.6

I did then a series on turning points in modern politics, the SDP, the financial crash and various

1:01.9

others, the Iraq War. And starting next week, I've recorded a series of nine on prime ministers

1:10.5

we never had. And of the three I've done so far,

1:14.1

this became for me the most interesting because quite a few of the figures in that list are,

1:21.6

I think objectively, whether you come from the left or the right, in some respects, bigger figures than some of those

1:28.6

who did become Prime Minister. In many cases, more charisma, more weighty figures, deeper figures

1:35.9

than some of those who made it to number 10. But for various reasons, none of them got the top

1:42.3

job, although in all cases they were seen at certain points in their

1:48.1

careers as the likely next prime minister or the probable next prime minister and they never got it.

1:57.4

The reasons for that has kind of guided me as to what will happen to Boris Johnson.

2:03.2

But before I explain that and reach a conclusion about Boris Johnson's leadership ambitions

2:09.6

and what will happen to them, here are the people that we or I speak about in this

2:15.8

television series starting next week. I think they're opening with Michael

2:21.0

Heseltine. So Heseltine is one obvious Prime Minister we never had, someone who was ambitious

2:27.1

openly so in some respects for the top job and never got it. We do Dennis Healy, Ken Clark. There's one which I enjoyed doing,

2:37.1

was the idea of one of the producers, to do the Miliband Brothers as one, Ed Miliband and David
